DESCRIPTION: Hird Island is located 25 minutes from a marina in Darien, Georgia. The island is home to deer, wild pigs, and armadillos. Shore birds like several kinds of heron and pelicans frequent the creeks and porpoise swim past the dock looking for dinner. The island does not allow cars and has about 35 vacation homes on its mile by 1/10 mile perimeter. Presently only 1 year round resident claims Hird as their permanent address.The house has two bedrooms with their own full baths and queen sized beds. There is also an enclosed loft with a double bed. The kitchen is fully equipped and there is a washer and dryer in a separate room off the porch for your convenience. A front porch overlooks the dockhouse and water for cool breezes and quiet conversation. A walking path circumvents the island behind the homes. Occasionally you will meet golf carts on this path on the weekends when home owners may be present, but the island is usually almost deserted. The living room boasts comfortable furniture facing a tabby (oyster shell) fireplace for cool evenings. Wide pine floors and walls offer a warm backdrop to quilts and framed prints. The dock house has a small porch to sit and watch the shore wildlife and a good dock for the boat.
Hird Island is accessible only by boat. We have a motor boat to rent from the marina or you can bring your own. We are a teacher and a boat yard owner/designer living in Maine. We have an 11 year old daughter and also a daughter who just graduated from college. Our exchanges are confined to the school calendar at this point in time! METROPOLITAN AREA: Savannah Darien is a small town about an hour from Savannah. It has two excellent restaurants, an antique store, a wine shop, and a supermarket. Brunswick is about 25 minutes away with major shopping centers and entertainment. There is also a restored plantation in town to tour. RENTAL AVAILABILITY: 365 days a year.
RENTAL RATES: $125 per day plus security deposit.
