DESCRIPTION: Overlooking the courtyard of an ancient abbey founded in the 9th century by St. Richarde, the estranged wife of Charles le Gros,the truculent ruler of France, our Andlau apartment is in a 17th century building that has been fully modernized. In our opinion, the Alsace is the quintessential medieval area of France and a myriad ancient towns exist within a few minutes of our doorstep. Strasbourg is 30 minutes away and other daytrips could include, Heidleburg, Freiburg, Colmar, Germany's Black Forest and Europapark (a well-run Disney-like entertainment park suitable for families). Museums abound, especially in the larger towns. If you are an old car buff, you can't miss the collection at Mulhouse, comprised of over 500 classics with more than 250 Bugattis! Like old castles? Haute-Koenigsbourg is 20 minutes away. Hike in the Vosges Mountains, cruise on the Rhine River, shop in the magnificent stores of Strasbourg, explore the Maginot Line, gaze at centuries old art hidden in secret corners of ancient churches still in use today, gamble at the casinos of Baden-Baden then plunge a naked body into the natural baths(modesty goes out the window here but NO hanky-panky), run the gauntlet amidst the ruins of numerous ancient castles .........aarrgghhhhhhh we just have to get back!
Alsatian wines are among the finest whites in the world and a 'tasting' trip down the Route du Vin (Wine Route) is a must. Take along your "designated driver" and enjoy the wonderful Rieslings, Gewurztraminers, Muscats, Tokays and other specialties offered by hundreds of vintners as you ramble about the ramparts of ancient, walled villages, over cobblestoned streets and past beautifully restored, half-timbered houses. Restaurants are too numerous to mention but include every experience from the friendly, local, family run place with homey atmosphere to the elegant, gustatorial pinnacle of a Michelin 'three star', two of which are located near Andlau. Rental is CAN $800.00 per week. This is an all inclusive price and no further charges will be levied. While the apartment sleeps four comfortably, four adults is very crowded so we limit this number of occupants to families only. Please no pets or smoking.
